BRIDGE LESSONS AT RANDWICK BRIDGE CLUB

My Dear Friends,

I am very sad to announce that I will no longer be able to give bridge lessons on behalf of Randwick Bridge Club. It has been an honour and a privilege (as well as a lot of fun!) to have done so over the past 12 years or so but there comes a time when all good things must come to an end. During the next few weeks I shall be moving out of Sydney to the country - in fact to a converted barn on my son's farm which will become my new home.

Unfortunately, I have been unable to find anyone to take my place but if and when the Club is able to provide lessons once more, an announcement will be made right here on this page of the Club's website.

In the meantime, for those people who would like to learn how to play our wonderful game, I have two suggestions:

1) I can heartily recommend The Joan Butts Online School of Bridge where you learn to play and practice Bridge online. Joan is a qualified teacher as well as an International Bridge player and is the Teaching Coordinator at the Australian Bridge Federation (ABF). Joan's Curriculum draws on her many years teaching experience and features more than 80 Bridge lessons from beginners to advanced levels. Full details at joanbuttsbridge.com

2) If you prefer a classroom environment, then I suggest you get in touch with the New South Wales Bridge Association who run some excellent courses themselves or can usually advise on others taking place in the Sydney area. Talk to Liz Sylvester or Pauline Gumby Tel: (02) 9264 8111.

Happy bridging and my

Very best wishes to you all

BRIDGE LESSONS - NEW COURSES FOR 2018

The next course of lessons for Beginners will commence on Saturday, 4 August 2018.

The next Beginners' Class will be held on Saturday mornings at the Coast Centre for Seniors, Ewing Avenue, Little Bay, starting on Saturday, 4 August, 2018 and will last for 12 weeks until 20 October. Each lesson starts at 10am sharp and is split into two one-hour segments with a 10 minute break for complimentary tea/coffee and biscuits at the half-way point. We usually finish around 12:15.

The learning experience will be very "hands-on" with an emphasis on practical examples being played at the table.

The Coast Centre is approximately 4km from Maroubra, just off Anzac Parade. Parking is very easy and plentiful.

The cost will be $20 per person per session ($15 for Coast Centre Members) and each lesson includes lesson notes and various hand-outs. Alternatively, you may choose to pay the whole course fee "up-front", in which case, you will receive a substantial discount. Please contact Linda Mearing, the Manager of the Coast Centre for Seniors, who will arrange payment. You are encouraged to become a member of the Coast Centre - cost $20 per annum (if you are not one already).

You will also need to purchase two course books (cost $25 each) which are necessary because they contain additional material and exercises which, because of time limitations, may not all be included in the classes. These will be provided at the time of your enrolment. They also serve as a handy reference after the course has finished.

At the end of this course of lessons, you will receive a Certificate of Achievement and you will have sufficient knowledge of the game to be able to play socially or to join a Bridge Club and take part in regular Duplicate Bridge sessions. For example, Randwick Bridge Club meets regularly at the Senior Citizens' Centre in Alma Road, Maroubra on Saturday afternoons and Wednesday evenings. You will also be offered a number of supervised sessions where your play will be overseen by a director, teacher and/or experienced player before playing "for real" in a club Duplicate Session. The Randwick Bridge Club session on Wednesday evenings is supervised.

If you would like to join me in learning what many people consider to be the best card game in the world, please let me know. I would appreciate knowing beforehand so that I can have some idea of numbers and am able to make the necessary arrangements.

It is ideal if you can attend with a partner (not necessarily your life partner) since Bridge is a partnership game. However, it is not of paramount importance because there will be many people who attend alone and long-term partnerships are often formed during Bridge classes.

If you have any friends, acquaintances, colleagues or family members who would also be interested, please let me know and I will be delighted to get in touch with them. My contact details are below.
